“This is a collection of religious music recorded in the southern American states in the 1920s and 1930s, and it includes both white and black performers to give some suggestion of the relationship and the differences between the two musical styles.”
Originally heard Blind Mamie’s “Honey In The Rock” on the first American Primitive compilation from Revenant, never knowing what else was recorded by her. Turns out she only issued one 78 - this other blues is also included here. BWJ is always great, “God Moves On The Water” been a personal favorite. The two tracks from Ernest Phipps & His Holiness Singers standout alongside Lonnie McIntorsh’s “The Lion and The Tribes of Judah”.
