The new Rag Lore CD will be issued along side a resurrected album of Mount Elephant. This CD edition will feature extra material not heard on the Space Slave cassette edition. Look out!

DFBM update:

http://dyingforbadmusic.com/index.php?dfbm-news&newsdetail=20130520-170_mount-elephant-rag-lore-pre-order-action-and-info

Mount Elephant + Rag Lore pre-order action and info

I am happy to announce, that after 2 years of announcing, the Mount Elephant re-release is finally finished. It turned out pretty nice and it needed the time to come to maturity. I mean it took 15 years to get the full recording so another 3 or 4 years are nothing.

Listen, watch and read about Mount Elephant – III and pre-order if you are conviced: http://dyingforbadmusic.com/dfbm15-mount-elephant-iii.phtml

And that’s not enough – another treasure is ready to set out. Matthew Russel Boteilho aka Rag Lore aka Poor Farm Edition Press created a splendid piece of handmade packaging that wraps perfectly around his lapsteel guitar tunes and ragas.

Listen to an alternative cut of Rag Lore – Sabah el Mitragyna Reveries and pre-order now: http://dyingforbadmusic.com/dfbm16-rag-lore-sabah-el-mitragyna-reveries.phtml

And speaking about pre-order. If you pre-order both releases you’ll get a limited label sampler with unreleased, exclusive and known material in a handprinted folder with recycled cut-up booklet and stuff. It’s limited to 25 so there is no guarantee, but as always (or mostly) the packages contain some additional stuff from my desk. Hurry up. Both releases are limited. Don’t miss them.

Almost 60 minutes of purely American primtive lapsteel guitar magic from Matthew Boteilho, who’s about to make a big move to Cairo, Egypt from Houston, TX. Lengthy, healthy improvisations where the shamanic string licks meet eternal drones and psychedelic atmospherics to fill your head with…

First official review of my new Rag Lore album “Sabah el Mitragyna Reveries”. Much thanks out to Jakob of Weed Temple for the kind words!

_______________________________________________

Really wild improv here from the duo of Daniel Bachman and Ian McColm. If you are familiar with Daniel’s solo work, you’d never be able to expect what’s to come on this tape here. This is some of my favorite recordings associated with his prolific output and surely shows the wide tonal range that is possible with just an acoustic guitar. Free jazz, experimentation, an avant garde ‘mess’ in the best possible way.

Ian is such a great performer that there’s plenty of times where there is no discernible difference between the drums and guitar, it’s hard to tell which sounds are coming from which instrument.

“Taman Shud”, meaning ‘ended’ or ‘finished’ in Farsi, is the name of an unsolved murder case of Australia circa 1948. The tracklisting seems to come from undecipherable ‘code’ associated with the case.

Lomax was commissioned by the Library of Congress to collect recordings for their project called Archive of American Folk Song. Original intentions of this project obviously imply the goal to archive the vast American songbook of the early 20th century. But select recordings collected by John A. Lomax were later edited by his son Alan and released commercially as sets of 78rpm records. Born in 1895, Smith Casey was a prisoner at Clemens State Farm in Brazoria, Texas, an area just south of Houston. John Lomax came to the prison in 1939 to record for the Library of Congress project. It was there that he recorded a variety of choral work songs and then 11 solo performances of Smith Casey.

The Library of Congress originally typed his name as Cason Smith on their record of documentation, and later during commercial release changed his name to Smith Casey. It was found that Casey’s father’s surname was actually Smith, so it may be that this guitarists real name is Casey Smith. But as it goes, we may actually never figure out this mix up. No photos of Casey are known to exist either.

The commercial release of Casey’s music in Archive of American Folk Song series saw an inclusion of just a couple of his 1939 performances. The rest of his music was released on LP in 1979 when Flyright took on the task of doing a series specifically on the Library Of Congress recording sessions.

When asked who gave the best performance they ever saw, many traditional Country Blues players of the older generations would sometimes state a person who had never been recorded - commercially, in the field, or otherwise. Hearing Casey’s music here defiantly serves as a reminder that perhaps hundreds of great rural players were actually never heard outside of their locale or the places they performed - and thus were never recorded. The very idea that Lomax could have easily not recorded Casey during his visit to Clemens State Farm is a daunting thought.

Would’a been a huge shame if Lomax never visited Casey, as these 11 selections are some of the greatest country blues pieces I’ve heard; complete with perfect slide work, nimble finger work, and a massive voice. I’ve always preferred field recordings for their impromptu nature, and the ‘rawness’ as it were is pretty apparent in these recordings here. On ‘Jack o’ Diamonds’ you can hear Casey ask “Again!?” in such a way that we can imagine Lomax having difficultly with this recording equipment, asking Casey play this piece over and over again.

I especially love the instrumental ‘East Texas Rag’ for it’s slide work. ‘Santa Fe Blues’ is another favorite complete with bass string snapping and high note bends that sound much the melody lines in the traditional piece of ‘Vestapol’. ‘See That My Grave Is Kept Clean’ is referred to here as ‘Two White Horses Standin’ In Line’ and as such is what Flyright titled the LP release that featured these 11 Smith Casey recordings. Casey was paroled in 1945 and moved to Huntsville, Texas, dying of tuberculosis in 1950.
_______________________________________________

*** Re-up, Mediafire is cracking down now. For documentation and completionist sake, the mp3 file titled “East Texas Drag” is actually published as “East Texas Rag” and you may re-name the file after download.

Caught old buddy Daniel on his stop in Houston, Texas at the Avant Garden. Thankfully have been able to see him perform many times in Virginia and now in Texas, and as always puts on an awesome show. This tour was accompanied by drummer Ian McColm; who has backed Daniel on multiple releases and also put out a duo recording with Daniel called “Taman Shud” - a cassette release on Feeding Tube Records.

Ian performed his upcoming work “Virgin Skins”. Which was a great set of drums + electronics using massive screeches, drones, thuds, bells, yells, and rhythm. Daniel performed selections from his recent release on Tompkins Square, Seven Pines”.

This CDr is the first to feature Daniel on lap slide guitar. This recent tour saw him performing a new composition on it as well. “Nandina” is my personal favorite - choice cut, prime grade stuff here. Banjo player Charlie Devine accompanies Daniel on the bulk of these tunes.

Daniel will be back on the road in two weeks roaming through the west coast, be sure to catch him when he comes around. I’ll be looking forward to his upcoming show at SXSW where he will be sharing the bill with William Tyler and Harry Taussig. SXSW 2013 marks the very first live performance of Harry Taussig’s elusive guitar playing. Look out!

_______________________________________________

Legendary collection of classical Indian artists and recordings. Alain Danielou traveled throughout North & South India during the 1950s to complete this documentation. This boxset is stated as the earliest long-playing overview of classical Indian music released in a western context.

Key landmark of this set is its feature of the first LP-length recorded duet between Ali Akbar Khan & Ravi Shankar; prior to which only a couple 78-issued recordings of their duets were scarcely heard in India. A highlight for me is the recording “Svara Mandala” by Svami D.R. Parvatikar. Here Parvatikar plays a dulcimer-type instrument called the Cimbalom; really beautiful sounds.. (and on another note matching something not unlike a dream where Tuluum Shimmering composes on the harp.) The vocal performances by the Dagar brothers are also my favorites; jump to track 16 for the “Alapa” performance.. slow, great big drone leanings.

This boxset was re-released in 1997 on CD by Auvidis in commemoration of Mr. Danielou who had passed away 3 years earlier in 1994. There’s a pretty good review on the discogs page for the CD re-release; I’ll include it below for some further details. But onward though - took a while to get this whole thing ripped but it’s a great one, enjoy!

Grumpiness writes:

“An exquisite compilation put together in honour of the cultural philanthropist Alain Danielou. When I first heard this album, my hair stood on end. I’m fairly familiar with the Indian Classical genre, but this was a whole new experience. The majority of the instrumental pieces are performed in the northern Indian style, which has taken some of its influence from the Mughal Empire and therefore has a more Middle Eastern flavour. The vocal performances are sung in the South Indian style, which was never touched by the Mughal Empire, and therefore draws more influence from Dravidian folk music. The effect of these vocal pieces is positively spine chilling. Being accustomed to the North Indian vocal style, I’m used to, (and reasonably fond of) the somewhat grandiose, melodramatic delivery of North Indian Ragas, especially when dealing with pieces which are designed to be a lament, or a dirge. The South Indian Ragas, by contrast, are performed cold. Surprisingly, having been stripped of the roller coaster vibrato, and overacted presentation of the Northern style, these songs come across as even more desolate. I can’t be sure if these Ragas were actually meant to be laments, because I don’t understand the language, (most of them are sung in Kannada, the regional language of Karnataka) but the loneliness, and haunting quality of the melodies is palpable, even though some of them are sung at a relatively fast tempo. I suspect some people may find the style a little disturbing.”

***I have an extra copy of this boxset. It’s an ex-library, overall G quality. Vinyl plays fine and has it’s fair share of hairlines, book cloth covered boxset is in good shape, no stains or rips, but the inside of the box is covered in hand-written library notes + check out dates.

Really (really) great, late 70s, collection of field recordings from Georgia by George Mitchell & Dennis Coelko. One of my favorite country blues compilations I own. It was re-released by Fat Possum on CD and more recently, the majority of these tunes were featured on the Mississippi compilation “Sticks Over My Shoulder”. Any material by Cecil Barfield is gold, especially the song “Hoochie Coochie Wagon”. The John Lee Ziegler tracks have always been my go-to when spinning this record; his clean picking & voice + the mic picking up the children playing in the background… perfect stuff. Check out the liner notes by George Mitchell on the backside of the sleeve.

I originally found a copy (new & unplayed!) of this LP from 50 Miles Of Elbow Room a couple years back.
One of my favorite tapes of the past or so 5 years. Been outta print for a couple years now. I’d first heard Dunn’s playing with MV & EE and subsequently grabbed this tape after recognizing his name. Ever since I’ve really dug all his solo material, Peace Be Your Rider was the ‘follow-up’ to this x2 tape set, and he also had a few albums before ‘Church of the Transfiguration’ on Medusa and InYrDisk. Doc Dunn is also associated with the group Transcendental Rodeo who put out a great ‘Volume 1’ CDr on Beniffer Editions in 2009 and a recent 2011 release on Healing Power Records.

Tape 1 is a bit more over-arching in terms of crafting some perfect drone + steel string picking: singing bowls, eastern instruments, gamelan pounding, & ominous tones. Tape 2 goes into more minimal & abstract paths. Beniffer put together a booklet full of Doc Dunn’s photographs translated through bright layers of color and a silk screened process. I’ve scanned this whole book and packaged it as a PDF - it is present in ‘Part 1’ of the download.
